gentoo minimal with gnome, necessary packages are vala. use emerge --ask gnome to install the meta package. might need gtk and introspection use flags
any unmask errors should be dealt with in your make.conf eg ACCEPT_LICENSE="*" or ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64"
use etc-update to deal with config files
